Stand Your Ground’ civil suit is a surprise

TAMPA – Casey Landes attacked Charles Podany in an alcohol-fueled rage, authorities say, chasing Podany as he tried to bicycle away, knocking him to the ground and beating him as he sought to crawl away.

A judge ruled in September that Podany, 49, was justified in shooting and killing the 24-year-old Landes. Prosecutors did not appeal the decision.

But Landes’ family is now suing Podany, claiming Landes was a victim of “wrongful death” and that Podany was a danger to the Bay Hills Village Mobile Home Park where Podany lives and where Landes was shot.

Florida calling card company included in $2.25M settlement

A group of prepaid calling card companie, including Pembroke Pines-based Alternatel Inc., have agreed to pay a $2.25 million to settle a civil suit brought by the Federal Trade Commission, the first major settlement in the government’s effort to curb deceptive marketing tactics in the industry.
