Bondi calls for tougher laws on `pill mills’

Attorney General Pam Bondi laid out plans to combat “pill mills,” asking the Legislature for tougher penalties to prosecute doctors at pain management clinics.

‘`We are the epicenter for the country in prescription drug abuse,” she said at an hour-long news conference in Tallahassee. “Cracking down on pill mills is one of our top priorities.”

In what officials said they believe to be the first federal criminal prosecution in Florida for striking and killing a manatee with a boat, Joseph Miata Jr., of Merritt Island, was sentenced Wednesday for killing a sea cow while zipping through a manatee slow zone, reports Florida Today in Melbourne.
